The National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) are focusing on secondary mathematics, following the implementation of ‘teaching for mastery’ principles through the Primary Mastery Specialists Programme.

The aims of the new curriculum and maths GCSE are more challenging. This, alongside the expectation that every child will achieve at maths, means that maths teachers and schools have a lot of challenges.

Ofsted, the NCETM, the Department for Education, and the National Curriculum Review Committee have all emphasised the pedagogy and heuristics used in Singapore.

The Singapore method of teaching develops pupils' mathematical ability and attainment without resorting to rote learning or memorisation. Developed over 30 years, this approach is designed to develop a sustainable understanding of maths which prepares pupils for their future life as well as exam success.

Our teaching for mastery approach can help raise pupils’ achievement in secondary mathematics. We've worked with maths hubs, schools and the NCETM to successfully implement the Singapore maths approach in primary schools across England. This course will provide secondary schools the opportunity to repeat the same success and meet the needs of the new mastery curriculum.

During this one day course you’ll explore the research and pedagogy from Singapore and its effective application in secondary maths. The course will include the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach, the use of questioning to encourage deep mathematical thinking and bar modelling.

You will participate in interactive sessions which illustrate the five core competencies of a problem-solving lesson and how to deliver “low threshold, high ceiling” activities that cater for both struggling and advanced learners.

Course impact for teachers

Secondary teachers will understand the pedagogy which underpins a mastery approach to maths teaching and come away with practical strategies for teaching to mastery. Teachers will be able to develop deep and sustainable understanding of maths among all their pupils, which will equip them for their GCSEs and future adult lives.

Course impact for schools

Schools will be better equipped to meet the objectives set out in the 2014 English national curriculum and ensure that all pupils succeed at maths.

Who should attend

Secondary school heads and deputy heads and key stage 3 maths teachers.
