Bar Modelling: One-Day Course

Teachers: £195 +vat Consultants: £325 +vat

The bar model method is pictorial; it develops from children handling actual objects, to drawing pictures and then drawing boxes to represent objects. Eventually, they will no longer need to draw all the boxes, instead they just draw one long bar and label it with a number.

Bar Modelling is a key feature in developing children's’ mathematical processes as it provides a representation that enables pupils to identify and analyse relationships in a problem situation and can be used to understand almost any concept in maths, including multiplication, division and even algebra.

In this course, participants will learn how bar models are taught to pupils using the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach. Plus you’ll unpack the types of bar models to use for various topics, such as solving structurally complex word problems.

Course impact for teachers

Teachers will come away with practical strategies to teach children to confidently tackle a variety of routine and non-routine problems, using bar models, in line with the national curriculum.

Course impact for schools

Schools can be confident that this key model will ensure the school is on the path to maths mastery success.
