Choosing the appropriate books
Which Level should I start at?
Choosing the appropriate level is simple, just download the placement tests.
A score of 80% or higher on a test indicates that the student is ready for the next level.
Textbooks or Workbooks/Activity Books?
You may wish to consider getting both the textbooks and workbooks/activity books for the appropriate levels.
They are meant to go together and reinforce each other.
Learning tasks are in the textbooks. Exercises or activities that allow the student to work more
independently or expand on what they are learning are in the workbooks and/or activity books.
Do I need Teacher's Guides or Home Instructors Guides?
If you want to use these books to enrich or supplement
a student's school curriculum, you will probably not need to get the Home Instructor's
Guides or Teacher's Guides as the books reinforce the material the student is already learning; however, many
parents have found them helpful. Certainly if you would
like more explanation about how the concepts are being taught or presented in the text, or would like solutions
to the problems, you can get the Home Instructor's Guides or Teacher's Guides for reference. If your student is having difficulties,
the Home Instructor's Guides and Teachers Guides will give you activities that help in introducing and teaching the topics.
If you are starting in the middle of the programme, the Home Instructor's Guides will explain the approach and
methods used at earlier levels. They also provide background information for the instructor that will explain why
and how the methods are used. Some approaches and methods in the Singapore math programme may differ from those used
in your local school, but applying different approaches to mathematics will help your child's understanding of the
material and strengthen their confidence.
(Please note that the it is important to get the correct guide for the series that you are using as they are not interchangeable.
Home Instructor's guides are for the
Primary Mathematics 3rd Edition series and the Teacher's guides are available for the My Pals are Here maths and science series)
